Remarkable Retro Rations 13

The 1980s were a colourful time..

Uh.. Right.. That's a pretty wicked hardcore understatement I guess.. I'd probably be more on point if I were to say "The 1980s were a time spent almost exclusively coming down from the acid trip that was the 70s with the help of pot to replace the acid", that's the only way we can explain away the goddamn colours and the fashion. We had to have been viciously motherfucking blitzed.

Our first product actually comes from the mid 1980s;

RC Cola and 7up Gums:
RC Cola Gum may not be that impressive since the whole 'Cola Gum' thing had been done before and it was never really very good, I mean.. Cola.. Gum? Come on, they're not meant to go together. How are you going to make something like chewing gum taste like Cola? The short answer is you're not, you're fucking not. You're going to either create something that is 'meh' or just good enough to pass or you're going to create something that is incredibly disgusting and makes you want to tear out your own tongue with a spork.

It's surprising then that something like 7up doesn't translate well into gum because really what is 7up? It's Lemon and Lime with a little carbonation and sweetening and that's that, right? Not difficult, not hard flavours to work with.. And yet.. 7up Gum was disgusting, it didn't taste good and the slime-center while novel only seemed to make the gum worse, I don't know how it made it worse because normally I like things with slime in them/featuring slime but all I can say is somehow in my opinion it broke the rule and it did make it worse.

I've posted in the past about other Soda flavoured gums and some have actually done it right, Dr. Pepper for instance made a pretty decent gum and I don't really know why but to me 7up.. Yeck.. And RC Cola? Bleh.. No..

Chokito:
And our next product brings us back again to the 1970s, why the 1970s after we just got to the 1980s? Because whiplash, bitch, enjoy it.

Chokito is a Chocolate Bar, durh and if you hadn't figured that from the name I'd like you to kindly hit yourself squarely in the face, maybe it'll knock some gears and screws into places where they should be. It's another Oz Chocolate Bar and is a Bar which was introduced in the 1970s by Nestle Australia and is still around today.. So what is the Chokito Bar you may ask? Is it worth trying? All those questions and more shall be answered my friends!

The Chokito Bar is a Bar with thick Chocolate which covers Caramel Fudge and Crisp Rice and first of all, the Bar feels quite substantial, I mean quite substantial. It's thick and big, it's very very thick and will fill you up quite quickly if you're not a complete glutton. The Caramel Fudge is quite thick and sweet but soft and chewy at the same time while the Milk Chocolate melts nicely with the chewy nature of the Caramel Fudge and compliments the crunch of the Crisped Rice bits, it all comes together fairly nicely but it's not really that impressive.

All in all the Chokito is a well known Bar in Oz, even said to have been used in the movie Caddy Shack where a Chokito floating in the pool is thought to be poo. It's not poo of course but the Chokito Bar admittedly when floating in water probably could be passed off as a rather nutty poo.

..Yeah.. That'd probably do it..

The Chokito Bar in honesty gets a rating of 5.4/10 Big Cat Paws

It's not amazing but it's not bad. It's worth having but I wouldn't choose it against some other snacks if I had the choice.

Funnily enough our commercial jerks us from the 1970s back to the 1980s again! HAH! Whiplash biiiitch!

Dinner:
Felt like making something simple but good tonight, I didn't feel good enough last night to really want to prep anything extravagant or complicated ahead of time so today I made Tamago to Tosuto (Eggs and Toast) for James, two sunny side up Eggs with a Japanese Red Sauce (home-made), two pieces of Buttered Toast and a Cinnamon Sugar Salty Anpan (Sweet Roll)

Might not look like much but it came out pretty good and I'm definitely not unhappy with it.

  1. I actually liked the old cola "squirt" gums. But, the Bubbalicious Cherry Cola was the best. It didn't have a liquid center, but the taste was pretty much dead-on.

And the candy bar in the pool scene in Caddyshack was a Baby Ruth bar.

  2. I tend to disagree, I'd heard it was a Chokito but okay.

Yea, I remember the Squirt gum too.
