REVIEW: Disney XD - Ultimate Spider Man

First things first, Disney did a nice job with this series I have to say in getting the legendary Paul Dini as a producer for this show.

For those that aren't aware Paul Dini is a bloke that's worked in animation for quite a while on many great and varied shows ranging from Star Wars: Ewoks, Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman/Superman Adventures, Batman Beyond, and Duck Dodgers to even contributing to scripts for Transformers, Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited, HOLY BALLS that's a lot of EPIC right there!

We're of course talking about Disney XD's new Animated Series, Ultimate Spider Man!

First things first because we can't start with second things first, if we started with seconds things first then they'd be first and no longer second! HAHA! Aaanyway.. Ultimate Spider Man right off the bat has some pretty good voices, I mean.. Pretty great voices to be perfectly honest and candid.. The voice of Spider Man/Peter Parker is actually Drake Bell and yes, that Drake Bell from Nickelodeon who seems to be getting what is really his first big voice acting part in this show seeing as he's the title character and I'm amazed to say that so far I have to admit, I kind of like him.. He has done the character justice as far as I am concerned and his acting has been enjoyable, I think he's got this down pat.. Spider Man is also joined by Team Mates which is a little odd, a kind of divergence from the normal Spider Man we're used to which makes this series different, his Team Mates? Power Man/Luke Cage voiced by Ogie Banks who has played such parts as small parts in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (as a bully and 'Dark Ranger'), Edwin in All Grown Up, and a few other miscellaneous parts which admittedly haven't been that impressive but here he like Drake Bell has a chance to prove himself, then there's Kung Fu Master Iron Fist/Daniel "Danny" Rand voiced by Greg Cipes who I instantly noticed because I very much enjoy his voice-work from shows such as Ben 10 where he is Kevin Leven, Justice League where he voiced Jack, Teen Titans where he voiced Beast Boy and a few other characters, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go where he was Chiro, Caleb in W.I.T.C.H, and a few others, Nova/Sam Alexander who is voiced by Logan Miller who really hasn't done that much, and of course my favourite of the Team (no surprise why you'll see) drumroll - White Tiger/Ava Ayla who is voiced by Caitlyn Taylor Love who admittedly hasn't really been in anything else either..

Gotta say.. Although not all people are going to agree or have agreed, I think that this series has some great character design, artwork, and animation and I love the voice-acting so far, I've seen a great many episodes and I can't say that I've really found anything I've hated.. IN fact I've actually loved it, I usually hate Marvel shows and characters because I've found that more often than not the characters in Marvel and shows Marvel produces tend to feature characters who do nothing but whine and bitch like little pansy asses, I mean I can't count how many times I've heard from say the 1990s Spider Man Animated Series Spider Man whine and go over some inner-monologue about how 'Oh poor Mary Jane I suck so hard because of blahblahblah' or 'Aunt May and my fault and yapyapyap' and 'emo emo emo', GOD. JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP AND SLIT YOUR WRISTS IF YOU'RE GOING TO, STOP WITH THE DEPRESSING INNER MONOLOGUE! ....At least that's typically how I feel about Marvel and these shows.. Surprisingly this is not so.. No, this show actually takes Spider Man back to his energetic and frantic roots that makes him so much fun, instead of being a mopey bitch through the whole show the show has a way of being very Anime-like and lighthearted, carrying frequent moments when we see cut-aways where they break the fourth wall or even chibi-fy some of the characters in a fashion that I really just enjoy, I found myself thinking throughout this series that Spider Man really needs to have a get together with Dead Pool because between Spider Man's evident mental issues in this series in that he acts a bit 'off' and taunts the villains in quite a self destructive fashion and the breaking of the fourth wall? I see Dead Pool joining the mix and breaking every other wall that exists, Dead Pool breaking Spider Man's breaking the fourth wall by breaking the fourth wall himself? PARADOX! FUUUCK!

Like I said, maybe not for everyone but I enjoy it quite a lot and for me liking something Marvel that means that they're doing something right.. The show all in all is high-energy and like I said, the character designs, characters, voices, and animation I've all enjoyed, I love this show so far and I really look forward to seeing more.. We've even seen some cameo's from other characters and yes, they are of course milking the popularity of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Hulk and the Avenger movies because you can tell this was heavily inspired by them.. All in all I'd give this show so far (only halfway through the first Season) a rating of 9.0/10 Big Cat Paws. Damn good.

UPDATE:

And as of a recently viewed episode Ultimate Spider Man became even better for me because it featured "Taskmaster"/Tony Masters who is voiced by none other than Clancy Motherfuckingownyourface Brown otherwise known as drumroll THE GODDAMN KURGAN!! Hells yes the Kurgan is in Ultimate Spider Man! Mega points in my book now, awesome!
